How to figure out your interior style

Do you browse through Pinterest or Instagram and fall in love with every interiors shot you see?

Are you finding it hard to work out what type of style to go for in your home?

Well, here we look at five tips to help you figure out your unique style.

Look at what you already have

If you look at the furniture or accessories you already own and love you will be able to group them together into a style. For example, perhaps you have lots of rattan baskets, Macrame or reclaimed wood – by grouping these together you will realise you like the Boho, beach style. On the other hand, maybe you have lots of glass or mirrored furniture and prefer a more classic look. Every piece you’ve bought you would have loved once upon a time, so it’s always interesting to look at the patterns and see if that can help you hone down on a style.

Put together carefully curated boards

Pinterest is the best way to browse through interiors pictures and save them – but do so carefully! It’s easy to like – and therefore pin – every image you stumble across, with so many beautifully designed homes out there. But doing this isn’t going to help you understand your preferred style. Instead pause on each image you find and ask yourself if you really like all aspects of what’s in the scene – the furniture, the colours, the accessories, the artwork – and if not, list down which individual aspects you do like.

Analyse places you love

Perhaps there’s a coffee shop or restaurant that you just love going to for the interior design, or you have a friend’s house you dream about. But, why? What makes these places so special? Thing about what they include and what this could tell you about the style you want to go for. Remember, creating a home you love is all about how it makes you FEEL. So, if you feel inspired, relaxed or happy within a certain place, you will want to try and recreate that at home.

Plan before you buy

Something that always adds to a disjointed look in a home is if you buy random pieces without thinking about the bigger picture. Impulse buying that gorgeous cushion or the candles or frames you can’t live without may seem innocent, but if they don’t go well with the main, overall style you choose then they will look out of place. Instead, plan ahead what you will go for before you commit to buying anything. Window shop or look online and make a list of everything you’re looking at getting to make sure it all goes well together.

Work with an interior designer to figure it out

If after working through these tips you’re still confused on what style to go for in your new home or for your home makeover, then it’s time to reach out to an interior designer. But before picking one, have a look at their previous portfolio or social media pages to make sure you like the work they have done. As designers we work on many different styles for clients, but there will always be one that we feature more than others. So do your homework before signing up for some help.
